Course Overview

This course is designed for Senior Managers, Sponsors or Accountable Executives, and Stakeholders, who are involved in the oversight of significant agile business change initiatives. It gives an understanding of their role in ensuring project outcomes are achieved within time, budget and high-quality delivery.

It is designed to introduce, or remind, the participants of the importance of their role in delivering successful change. It will illustrate best practice by the use of pointers and pitfalls based upon recent project experience.

Using a case study approach it will illustrate the early warning signs of a project that is challenged. It will give rule-of-thumb indicators to provoke further scrutiny by the Sponsors or Accountable Executives and Stakeholders. It will give participants some simple tools to help with their analysis and decision making.

It will allow sponsors to make timely decisions to improve the probability of the realisation of business goals. Typically organisations invest a significant amount of money each year on major initiatives and it is critical that these projects are well executed in order to

Organisationally this course will harmonise the role and approach of Sponsors, Stakeholders and Product Owners to provide clarity and consistent expectations for delivery teams, Scrum Masters, Change Managers, Project Managers. All of the techniques presented are understandable and logical; they are therefore readily adopted by the course participants.

Course Content

A case study, based on recent client company project experiences, will be used to reinforce positive behaviours; highlight what has been accomplished – what was done well; and also flush out what can potentially go wrong.

Practical tips will be given on how to introduce these techniques for projects that are underway and how to start new projects from the outset.

By its’ design, the programme is readily transferable into the workplace and enables business benefits to be delivered from the time the participants return to their workplaces.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the characteristics of an agile initiative and then select and apply appropriate managerial practices in order to ensure success,
  • Define their role and “accountability” when over-seeing or serving as a stakeholder or directly managing a significant agile project or programme,
  • Identify project and operational risks and understand if these are being adequately managed and mitigated,
  • Establish a clear an unambiguous set of business benefits and manage the project activities towards the realisation of those business goals,
  • Understand how the business case is used to steer the project and provides a backdrop to Sponsor decision making,
    • To approve project changes,
    • To pause and re-assess,
    • To Go live no matter what, and assess the likely impact of that decision,
    • To stop an activity.
  • Understand how the agile methodology and tools are used to reduce risk and ensure successful delivery,
    • Encouraging healthy escalation,
      Becoming Coach, and a Senior Champion,
      Providing a situation where people can speak up and challenge without fear of the consequences,
  • Speak a common language around managing significant projects and promote a consistent execution approach across the leadership team,
  • Apply the key concepts of this course to current, and future, business change projects.


This programme is designed for Senior Managers who are involved, or could be involved, in overseeing and sponsoring significant business change initiatives, projects and programmes.


This course does not have any pre-requisites.

This course is designed to provide experiential learning, so some pre-course reading and preparation would be beneficial.
